Change Management in Semantic Web Services Change Management in Semantic Web Services in Legal Domain using FSM XXM Introduction With the new paradigm of Service Oriented Computing, many enterprises attempt to utilize services as fundamental elements for developing applications/solutions as an additive layer on top of existing components. The Web Service Controller Architecture (WSCA) for service-based, enterprise-scaled business solutions provides exactly this flexibility. The design, exposure and management of services can be accomplished through a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) that supports the usage, composition and coordination of services in a loosely coupled manner. Web services appear to be particularly suitable for addressing these aspects of a SOA. Furthermore, composition languages such as BPEL add value by composing Web services and facilitating the implementation of business processes. As the SOA paradigm brings this big behavior change relying on loose coupling of services it raises new questions in the area of change management. Change management is a central aspect in any software design, but its complexity for Web services is increased by both composition languages and loose coupling. The resulting advantages like composability, autonomy, message-based communication, and the avoidance of combined compilation and binding prove to be deficiencies in this context. In this paper we discuss these elementary challenges of change management in the area of Web services (Web Service Change Management, WSCM). Currently there are no sound mechanisms and engineering principles for changing Web services and their related entities. Through analysis of a suitable scenario, specifically looking at the details of the Web service provider and consumer roles, one can identify the various problems that exist in this domain. Therefore we will start our approach with the consideration of an application scenario from the business domain of application and change management, the addition of Web services in private legal sector. An Overview of a WSCA A WSCA consists of several autonomous outsourced Web services, but acts as a virtually coherent entity. Business entities, in the form of Web services, are often geographically distributed and organizationally independent. While WSCA has a potential to introduce new business opportunities through dynamic alliances, the challenges of fully realizing a WSCA lie in managing changes during its lifecycle through Extreme X Machines (XXM). XXM: In this paper we explore the design changes as made to software projects by the use  of a formal model known as Extreme X-Machines (XXM) [5,6], which  are based on the work of Eilenberg and Holcombe [7,8]. An XXM model describes the functionality of the software without defining exactly how this functionality is achieved. This perspective allows an analysis of functional change whilst excluding specific implementation or requirements issues. XXM are a state based model, they are intended to be used by developers as a method to design  their systems from at the top level but here, XXM are used as effectively to analyze and incorporate changes in, even addition of new web services. Each model typically consists of a set of states which correspond to screens in the final system and functions which link the screens together. The functions are typically labeled with an enabling action such as â€Å"click_ok† which corresponds to a user clicking the OK button. Figure depicts the architecture of a WSCA. There are two key components and two supporting components in this architecture. The key components include a WSCA schema and a WSCA instance. The two supporting components include ontology providers and Web service providers. †¢ WSCA schema: A WSCA schema consists of a set of abstract services and the relationships among these services. An abstract service specifies one type of functionality provided by the Web services. They are not bounded to any concrete services. They are defined in terms of service concepts in a Web service ontology. †¢WSCA instance: A WSCA instance is a composition of a set of concrete services, which instantiates a WSCA schema. It actually delivers the functionality and performance of a WSCA. †¢ Ontology providers: The ontology provider manages and maintains a set of ontologies that describe the semantics of Web services. A WSCA outsources semantics from an ontology provider to build up its schema. †¢ Web service providers: The Web service providers offer a set of Web services, which can be outsourced to form WSCA instances. The lifecycle of a WSCA is a series of stages through which it passes from its inception to its termination. There are four phases in a WSCA lifecycle: initiation, composition, service-orchestration and termination. The initiation phase is the first stage, where the WSCA is described at a high level. It is initiated when the owner of the WSCA establishes a need for a business objective [53]. The composition phase deals with integrating the selected Web services [42]. After this, the selected Web services are orchestrated to provide the value-added service. The termination phase occurs when the owner of the WSCA decides that the execution of the WSCA is no longer required. To materialize the concept of WSCA, the WSCA must automatically adapt to its dynamic environment, i.e., to deal with changes during its lifetime. Because of the dynamic nature of Web service infrastructure, changes should be considered as the rule and managed in a structured and systematic way [52]. Changes may be introduced by the occurrence of new market interests, new business regulation, or underlying service availability. Such changes require a corresponding modification of the WSCA structure with respect to the functionality it provides and the performance it delivers. Once a change occurs, a WSCA must react in a reasonable time and realign itself to deal with the change. This alignment must be performed in an automatic manner considering the frequent occurrence of the changes to a WSCA. By doing this, the WSCA can not only deal with unanticipated changes to the underlying services and infrastructure, but also maximize its market value, optimize functionality outsourcing, and maintain competitiveness. Problem Formulation The problem with the existing system of legal decision making process is that: There is no universal coalition body to unite the various modules of law in private sector like: A Public Interface to query for a case Online allotment of Advocates to users Judgments Union of India (to export Central Acts and Amendments) State Acts (to export State Acts and Amendments) The whole system of legal enactment starting from user query, allotment of Advocate, and referring judgments is not under a single roof. Due to inadequacy of getting the latest and updated Acts or Amendments, sometimes old acts are cited which later cause problems when the case is taken up in courts. This is a cause of embarrassment to the lawyer. In the existing System there is no spontaneous notification to the legal bodies regarding a change in the Acts. They themselves have to search for it on internet or find them in the latest issues. The problem is that they are not notified about the change in Acts automatically. Proposed Solution The need is to have an automated Legal System in India, at least at the private level. And this automation should be done with the most contemporary and best suited group of technologies. The problem uncovers the major issue of incapability of notification of changed Acts or Amendments to the related bodies. The proposed WSCA model namely LegalCosmos functions to provide a comprehensive Legal Solution that outsources the functionality from various service providers, such as WS_IndianUnionAmmendments, WS_StateActAmmendments, WS_PublicInterface, WS_AdvocateAssociation, WS_Judgments (depicted in Figure 1.2). The user in need of a legal solution makes use of the web service WS_PublicInterface and submits his, here accused, details and the details of the FIR filed by the complainant and forwards the FIR details like Case Crime No, Name, crime, date etc., to the WSCA which allots a Lawyer for the case with the help of WS_AdvocatesAssociation. An interested user (may be lawyer or a normal user) can find the details of the judgments through the WS_Judgments service. When a judgment is made the WS_Judgment web service provides the user with the copy of the order of the judgment. When these services are combined together as a WSCA, the WSCA will invoke the services on behalf of the user. There may potentially be some dependency relationship between them. These dependencies determine the composition of the services. In the case of the LegalCosmos WSCA, users do not necessarily need to provide the information for each service. The input of some services can be derived from the dependency relationship. Like in WS_AdvocateAssociation selected advocate details are directly passed to the WS-Judgments. Fig. Change Reaction for adding two new web services WS_UnionOfIndia, WS_StateActs WSCA Schema using Finite State Machine Definition: FSMis a mathematical  model of computation  used to design both  computer programs  and  sequential logic  circuits. It is conceived as an  abstract machine  that can be in one of a finite number of  states. The machine is in only one state at a time; the state it is in at any given time is called the  current state. It can change from one state to another when initiated by a triggering event or condition; this is called atransition. A particular FSM is defined by a list of its states, and the triggering condition for each transition. Fig. WSCA Schema (A simple XXM) Change Management in LegalCosmos The change management in the proposed LegalCosmos WSCA primarily deals with the change in Acts in the form of Amendments. This change origins from the addition of two web services provided by the â€Å"Union of India† that produces amendments at the central level and the â€Å"State Acts† that produces amendments at the State level. Since these changes are initiated by the outsourced service providers and incorporate an alteration in web service. They form the part of bottom up changes. The bottom-up approach for managing changes is highly dependent on the services that compose the WSCA. Therefore, it is necessary to first define the changes that occur to Web services, and then map them onto the business level. These changes include Activation changes that occur at the service level and WSCA changes that are executed at the business level. Finally, we provide rules for mapping triggering changes to their respective reactive changes. In our work, we assume that activation changes occur asynchronously. For instance, the WS_PublicInterface service may not change its data types while the activation change of unavailability is being managed. Another assumption we make is that the service is associated with a set of states. We associate each change with a transition between two states: precondition and postcondition. For example, a precondition for PI’s unavailability is that it was previously available and the postcondition is that it has become unavailable. Activation changes and their respective preconditions and postconditions will later be used to model changes using FSM and XXM. Fig. Activation Changes Non-Functional Changes Non-functional changes represent the dependability, usability, and trust associated with a member service. This information may be stored by a third party, the WSCA, or member services. We assume the information is stored as attributes that are maintained by an independent third party service provider. Changes to the trustworthiness of a Web service relate to the security, reputation, and privacy of a Web service. Changes in usability are dependent on the responsiveness and service cost. Finally, changes to dependability are associated with the availability and reliability of the Web service. Changes to service dependability are binary, because they represent two distinct states. For example, a service may either be available or unavailable. Alternatively, changes to service trust and usability are non-binary. For instance, service cost may assume more than two values during a member service’s lifetime. Therefore, we assume that a threshold is set and maintained by the WSCA. This threshold declares the minimum and maximum intervals of a value accepted by the WSCA. For example, the WSCA has the threshold of minimum $5 and maximum $10 for any judgment service cost. Every time a change occurs to the cost of a member judgment service, it is compared with the threshold. Only if the change exceeds the threshold, we consider that a triggering change has occurred. Note that the changes we have defined, such as changes to availability, are applicable to member services only. Once a member service is replaced, it is no longer part of the change management mechanism. For example, the e-Acts member service EA1 may become unavailable, and prompt the WSCA LegalCosmos to select an alternate e-Acts service EA2. After some time, EA1 may become available. However, since it is no longer a part of the Lega lCosmos LCS, the LegalCosmos WSCA does not manage the change in EA1. Table 6.1.1.1 summarizes the non-functional changes in Web services. Non-Functional Changes Fig. Non-Functional Changes Functional Changes Unlike non-functional changes, which are based on attributes, functional changes deal with changes to a service’s WSDL description [22]. We represent functional changes as a combined execution of a remove followed by an add. We further classify functional changes into structural and behavioral changes (Figure 6.1). Structural changes refer to the operational aspects of a Web service. For example, a structural change in a PI service can be caused by changing the operations offered to a user. Changes to the behavior of a Web service are indicated by changing its interaction with external entities. Functional changes to a member Web service occur when its WSDL description is modified. We assume these changes are initiated by the service provider. It has to be removed as it gives only immutable acts and does not involve latest amendments done by the Bare Acts. This causes problems to the WSCA in maintaining latest updates of the amendments and sometimes leads to false application of acts. A new web service called WS_UnionOfIndia is added to the WSCA which supplies the latest acts and amendments to WSCA. The Union of India is responsible for making and amending acts on the Central level. A new web service called WS_StateActs is added to the WSCA which supplies the latest acts and amendments to WSCA. The State Acts is responsible for making and amending acts on the State level. XXM for WSCA when Functional Changes are introduced (after the removal of e-Acts web service and addition of two new web services, WS_UnionOfIndia and WS_StateActs) Fig. The above figure shows the two newly added web services namely WS_UnionOfIndia and WS_StateActs. WSCA Changes Each activation change will initiate a WSCA change at the business layer. WSCA changes may occur at the composition and service orchestration levels of a WSCA. For instance, a Dt change in the PI service may trigger inconsistencies in the WSCA composition, such as incorrect parameter data types. Alternatively, a Da change may disrupt WSCA service orchestration. We divide the WSCA changes into composition and service orchestration. Fig. WSCA Changes at business level Mapping of Changes A Mapping specifies how changes in one layer correspond to changes in another layer [86]. These mappings must remain consistent in the presence of frequent changes. When a change occurs at the service level, the business layer must react to manage the changes. Triggering changes have a reactive impact on the business layer of the WSCA. Our approach of mapping changes is based on mapping rules. These rules are based on the activation changes and their corresponding business level changes of WSCA. Some changes may have more than one rule associated with them. Why was Malcolm X such a controversial man? I will now tell you about the life and times of Malcolm, and while doing so, attempt to answer this, o so timely question that so many have asked. Early Life   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Malcolm Little was born in 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska. His mother, Luis Little was a house wife. His father, Earl Little was a well-known Baptist Minister. When Malcolm was three years old, white supremacist's threats to his father forced the rather large family the parents had, to move. They chose to settle in Lansting, Michigan. But this homestead would not last for long. Soon after, their house was turned to ashes by more Area Nation members. But the hate would not stop there.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Only two years later Earl Little has found dead on the trolley tracks. The Police, of course, presumed both the death, and the fire, accidents. But Malcolm and his family knew the hateful truth.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  These Events led to the mental sickness of the tattered widow and mother, Louis Little. She was committed to an Institution (Barbara Haberman, 2002). Malcolm and his brothers and sisters were split up into foster homes and orphanages.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Despite all this tragedy, Malcolm became a good student in Elementary and middle school. He had dreams of becoming a successful lawyer someday. But one teacher, that Malcolm had favored, shattered these dreams in just one ignorant statement. He told him that this aspiration of becoming something of such a profession, was â€Å"no realistic goal for a nigger†-Teacher‘s name not known- (Barbara Haberman, 2002). This statement, that if told to any white man of that time, would have been thought to be true. Malcolm soon turned away from school and all he had cared about. Malcolm’s Imprisonment   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In High School, Malcolm became rebellious. After he later dropped out, he became a hustler while going through odd jobs. New York City was the place for this zoot suit wearing bad boy. For four years he shifted between NYC, Boston, and Michigan. Soon Malcolm had gotten caught up the conation and lost trace of his morals. He was even caught staling from friends and family. Once Malcolm said he wanted â€Å"to fight for the Japanese and kill crackers (white people)† ((whole paragraph) William Strickland, 1964)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In 1946 Malcolm was sentenced to 10 years in Massachusetts State Prison for the burglary he had recently committed.

Human relations can help you in a few different ways. Having the skill can help you land that job you always wanted and you would be able to enjoy it. You may also become more productive at it and stay with the job longer which in turn would allow the chance to climb the corporate ladder. Our personality has a lot to do with how we relate to other persons in our personal and professional life. It can also affect our ability to interact with others, which in turn can take an impact on our career. So it is very important to separate our personal life from our professional one. For instance if you are having a bad day because of something that may had happened at home you need to leave that problem at home. It will still be there when you return. If you take it out on a patient, a client, or an employee that would be considered poor human relation skills. That is why I think the study of human relations is important, because it can help us understand others and help us separate our personal life from our professional one.

Site and Situation in Urban Geography The study of settlement patterns is one of the most important aspects of urban geography. Settlements can range in size from a small village with a few hundred residents to a metropolitan city of over one million people. Geographers often study the reasons behind why such cities develop where they do and what factors lead to their becoming a large city over time or remaining as a small village. Some of the reasons behind these patterns are thought of regarding the areas site and its situation. Site and situation are two of the most important concepts in the study of urban geography. Site The site is the actual location of a settlement on the earth and is composed of the physical characteristics of the landscape specific to the area. Site factors include things like landforms, climate, vegetation types, availability of water, soil quality, minerals, and even wildlife. (i.e., is the area protected by mountains or is there a natural harbor present?) Historically, these factors led to the development of major cities worldwide. New York City, for example, is located where it is because of several site factors. As people arrived in North America from Europe, they began to settle in this area because it was a coastal location with a natural harbor. There was also an abundance of fresh water in the nearby Hudson River and small creeks as well as raw materials for building supplies. Also, the nearby Appalachian and the Catskill Mountains provided a barrier from moving inland. The site of an area can also create challenges for its population. The small Himalayan nation of Bhutan is a good example of this. Located within the worlds highest mountain range, the terrain of the country is extremely rugged and hard to get around. This, combined with the incredibly harsh climate in many areas of the country has made much of the population settle along rivers in the highlands just south of the Himalayas. Also, only 2% of the land in the nation is arable, with much of it located in the highlands, making a living in the country highly challenging. Situation The situation is defined as the location of a place relative to its surroundings and other places. Factors included in an areas situation include the accessibility of the location, the extent of a places connections with another, and how close an area may be too raw materials if they are not located specifically on the site. Though its site has made a living in the nation challenging, Bhutans situation has allowed it to maintain its policies of isolation as well as its own highly separated and traditionally religious culture. Because of its remote location in the Himalayas getting into the country is challenging and historically this has been beneficial because the mountains have been a form of protection. Kidney Disease effects many aspects of life and can change someone’s life for the worse. The Kidneys are two organs that are located on the left and right of the spine in the middle of the back. They are in a shape of a bean and about the size of a human fist. The main function of the kidneys is to remove waste and excess fluid from the body. They also regulate the body’s salt, potassium, and acid content. The kidneys produce hormones and vitamins that regulate blood pressure and help the metabolism. Without the kidneys, the body would not be able to function successfully. When diagnosed with kidney disease there are many symptoms that come with it. High blood pressure is most common symptom. Most other symptoms deal with urination and swelling of the body. Symptoms coming from urination include burning or difficulty during urination and increase in frequency of urination. Also, the passage of blood in urine is not uncommon. Puffiness around the eyes, swelling of the feet and hands, and pain in the small of the back is also to be expected when diagnosed. There are many kinds of kidney diseases. The 3 main types of disorders are congenital disorder, chronic disorder, and acute disorder. Congenital disorders are either genetic or developed at a very early age. Chronic disorders develop over many years and are long-lasting. Acute disorders occur very suddenly and are very dangerous. An example of how to develop acute kidney disease is from a blockage of the kidney drainage system. Causes of kidney disease can be developed after a long period of time or something that occurs suddenly. All causes are dangerous and lead to death either from the kidneys are the disease itself. Diabetes and High Blood Pressure are the 2 main causes of kidney disease. Immune system conditions such as Lupus and HIV/AIDS are contributing factors of this disease. When a person is diagnosed with Hepatitis B and C, kidney disease is a very likely possibility. The only cause of kidney disease that is under human control is the consumption of alcohol. This can be very dangerous to every part of a human body but the kidneys are greatly affected. Alcohol prevents the kidneys from maintaining a proper balance of body fluids and minerals. It also damages the kidney cells, changing the structure and function of the kidneys. Lastly, drinking alcohol increases the chance of developing high blood pressure, which is the 2nd leading cause of kidney disease. Disorders that affect the kidneys can be diagnosed by a number of methods. Kidney imaging such as MRIs and X-Rays are the most common method. Blood tests, urinalysis, and renal kidney are a few of the others. Renal kidney is a biopsy done on the kidney where samples of the kidney are taken and tested. So when Suntel Ltd was brought under Dialog, employees who were working for Suntel had a very difficult time adjusting to Dialogs new culture. But if they do not hear from the company and technical staff Information not passed properly Communication barriers as difficulties in communicating to all levels of the staff can cause misunderstanding and as a result may create problems especially at the very lower level staff. Differences in perception Also different peoples perception would be different. Some may feel that merging the two companies would be obviously an opportunity for their career improvement while other might take it as a huge threat. Uncertainty of Job Security conflicts occurred.. 4.1- Effects of conflicts Conflict situations sometimes can be taken as a positive thing depending on the situation. However, some of the main negative effects of conflicts are; Stress De-motivation Absenteeism (5%) Staff turnover (5%) 4.1- Resolving conflicts When it comes to conflict within the company, Dialog takes all the relevant actions at the right time to avoid unnecessary fights and disagreements. This is because they believe that it would hugely affect the productivity level of the employees. The company has a written code of conduct where every employee follows and is aware about the companies policies and procedures. When handling conflicts, the matter is first discussed at the supervisor or the relevant department level and thereafter then line Manager. If the matter is still not solved then the issue is raised to the HR Dept and further to Senior Management level. In worst cases, Arbitrators are invited to solve the problem if required. When it comes to the procedures, first the staff is negotiated verbally and if that does not help, written explanation as well as enquiries is done. However if all these actions do not work then written warnings are also given. 5- Change Management through organization learning 51- Single Loop Double Loop Learning model As per the model, Dialog uses the two ways to learn from their experience; Single Loop Learning The company takes corrective action to avoid or resolve a mistake but does not go deep into the matter. Double Loop Learning This is where the company looks into the root of the problem to find the underlying cause of the problem. 6- Conclusion Based on the above information and extensive research done, it may be concluded that the company has a very open and transparent culture. In addition, it is successful in managing culture, change and conflict. This is because Dialog Company has a set procedure for everything as per their Code of Conduct. Further when a new staff joins or is recruited, the staff will be provided with a clearly written job description so that everybody would know what is their role and what is expected from them. 7- Recommendations Although the company is successful in managing change and conflicts, the following recommendations would enable the company more Build an innovative platform to encourage creativity among staff Although staff is given the opportunity to come up with innovative ideas, at the moment the company does not have a special department When outsourcing give more choice to employees to choose their own way When outsourcing we feel that the staff should be given a chance to choose what is best for them. For example in case when card centre of Dialog was outsourced, they were not given any chance for their own views whether they want a transfer to another department within Dialog or want to join the new company. If they should have given the chance or at least got some feedback, then they might not have felt negative. Introduce job enrichment to motivate the staffs At the moment there is no job rotation or job enrichment programes within the company. However, if job enrichment programme is introduced, the staff would feel more motivated and responsible for their work. Death and Immortality in The Epic of Gilgamesh The search for immortality has been a major concern for many men and women all throughout history. True love and immortality in life would be a dream come true to many. To spend time with a special someone, the person one feels closest to, and never have to say good-bye would greatly appeal to most people. But when death steps into the picture, even with all the pain and devastation, one starts to re-evaluate themselves. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh explores the possibility of immortality following the saddening death of his friend and brother, Enkidu. Gilgamesh, feeling the fear of his own mortality, sets out on a journey to search for a way to preserve himself. Although the journey that he endures is much larger than life, Gilgamesh comes to realize that he can never achieve immortality. Before the creation of Enkidu, Gilgamesh is a man without an equal match. He is an individual with overwhelming power, and it is because of this that makes Gilgamesh a very arrogant person. This arrogant side of him is accompanied by an extensive abuse of power, which leads to injustice and rage in the city of Uruk: â€Å"The young men of Uruk he harries without warrant†. This problem does not bother Gilgamesh; he lives to display to others his royal power. The first sign of change in Gilgamesh occurs after the birth of Enkidu. Gilgamesh’s mother, Ninsun, said to him, â€Å"Like a wife you’ll love him, caress and embrace him, he will be mighty, and often save you†. Gilgamesh has finally found his match, a friend who will serve as his life long companion. This new seal of friendship will cause a chang... ...nsciousness after death, or maybe a combination of both, which creates this fear. The fear felt is undoubtedly universal. However, the ways in which it is dealt with are varied and diverse. The concept of human mortality and how it is dealt with is dependent upon one’s society or culture. It is the society, which has the greatest impact on an individual’s beliefs. Hence, it is also possible for other cultures to influence the people of a different culture on such comprehensions. The irony of the story is that Gilgamesh, who wanted to enjoy immortality, actually achieves his dream. Thousands of years after his death, he and Enkidu live through the story of their adventures, which has been passed down through time. Gilgamesh and Enkidu will be kept in an immortal state for however long The Epic of Gilgamesh is told.

Racial and Ethnic Discrimination in Canada Essay

â€Å"You know the world is off tilt when the best rapper is a white guy (Eminem), the best golfer is a black guy (Tiger Woods), the tallest basketball player is Chinese (Yao Ming, 7’6†³) and Germany doesn’t want to go to war (in Iraq)†. Charles Barkley stated in a 2003 interview, pointing out various misconceptions with stereotypes. A stereotype is defined by dictionary. com as: â€Å"something conforming to a fixed or general pattern; especially: an often oversimplified or biased mental picture held to characterize the typical individual of a group†. I have commonly heard stereotypes such as the French are good cooks, Italians are great lovers, and the Irish are lazy or comments made like dumb jock, lazy Cape Bretoner, or that women are not strong!! The list could go on endlessly as there appears to be stereotypes regarding people of all races, religions, sexes and ethnic groups, etcetera. Stereotypes can be either positive or negative. Most stereotypes tend to make us feel superior in some way to the person or group being stereotyped. Stereotypes ignore the uniqueness of individuals by painting all members of a group with the same brush. Throughout the course of this paper I plan to discuss some racial and ethnic issues in Canada. Where some of these issues originated from, what we can personally do to help eliminate discrimination in the workplace and what the government is doing to try to combat such discrimination. Let me first begin by defining discrimination, racism and ethnicity since these terms are all important terms to understand before going into further discussion. To discriminate is simply defined by yourdictionary. com as: â€Å"To make distinctions on the basis of class or category without regard to individual merit; show preference or prejudice. † Therefore, discrimination occurs when a person is not treated equally because of their gender, race, religion, ethnic origin, nationality, sexual orientation, or age. Yourdictionary. com defines racism as: â€Å"The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. Discrimination or prejudice based on race. † In other words, when an individual or group is treated unfairly or abused because of their skin color or racial heritage they are victims of racism. Ethnic, as defined by yourdictionary. com is: â€Å"Of or relating to a sizable group of people sharing a common and distinctive racial, national, religious, linguistic, or cultural heritage. B. Being a member of a particular ethnic group, especially belonging to a national group by heritage or culture but residing outside its national boundaries. † With that being said, it is my belief that stereotypes and ignorance about others most often lead to discriminatory behavior both inside and outside the workplace. I have heard Canada described as a multicultural nation meaning that Canadians are not of any one cultural background, race or heritage. For all Canadians, including Aboriginal People, this multicultural diversity can be traced to an immigrant past. This does not mean that the majority of today’s Canadians are immigrants but rather that the majority of Canadians have in their past, perhaps many generations ago, a family member who migrated here from another country. That is why many of us have a mixed ancestry, for example; Irish, Scottish, Ukrainian, French and Aboriginal, and the list can go on. Canada’s Aboriginal People were the first to immigrate, and settle across the continent, tens of thousands of years before European settlers. After the European settlers came the French, followed by the English, Scots and Irish formulating Canada into the diverse country it is today. In the years before the American Civil War, thousands of black slaves escaped slavery in the United States by following the â€Å"Underground Railway† north to Canada. Then, at the turn of the century, American farmers moved northward into the Canadian prairies to develop farm lands. Although Canada originally consisted of a wide variety of immigrants, some people were not as welcome in the country as others and were therefore not treated equally. Those who were of different race, color, or religion then the majority of Canadians were labeled as â€Å"foreigners†. The use of the term â€Å"foreigner† held many connotations for example, different, strange or inferior and many at the time wanted to see the â€Å"foreigners† assimilate to fit into Canadian society. There are many events in Canada’s past that has contributed to the racism and discrimination in Canada today for example, the disregard and unfair treatment of Aboriginal Peoples by European’s who settled here. Even though a vast majority of African-Americans moved to Canada to avoid slavery, from early in the 1600’s until 1834 there was a recorded 4092 slaves throughout the country, mostly living in Quebec . The Asiatic Exclusion League, which originated in California in 1905 as an anti-Oriental movement, moved north into Vancouver in 1907. The league was the main instigator in anti-Asian riots in the city since their main goal was to have all Chinese and Japanese immigrants removed from North America out of fear that they were taking jobs away from Whites . It also appears that throughout history the acceptance of immigrants in Canada greatly depended upon the economic state of the country at that time. During the Great Depression of the 1930’s immigrants seeking jobs were unwelcome and overlooked for employment. Although the Government of Canada has made many advances in breaking the barriers that Aboriginal People, immigrants and minorities face in the country; immigrants today still face a number of problems when trying to enter the labor market, for example: ? Non-recognition of international credentials and work experience ? Lack of Canadian work experience ?Inability to communicate in English or French ?Insufficient labor market information prior to immigrating to Canada I have traveled to some of the major cities in Canada and was a little surprised by the degree of segregation that is apparent in these cities. By this, I mean that these larger cities, like Toronto and Vancouver, have communities which are almost completely independent from the rest of the country. These independent communities that I saw, of Chinese or Italian people, seemed to have everything they needed to survive within the community including their own schools. I could not help but wonder what effect this type of segregation has on the country. I respect the fact that all people are trying to protect their identity. At the same time, by choosing to live in Canada, shouldn’t they try to integrate into the country a little more while still preserving their identities? Shouldn’t they try to assimilate? How can Canada thrive as a country with so much segregation? We need to become a unified country. Not such a historical thought pattern, I guess!! It is people who have attitudes like mine that are causing problems in the country or do all people have these thoughts and choose not to admit it. I have similar negative feelings about scholarships being available only to certain people or government funding for certain people to attend university because they are a minority. I understand that differential treatment is required in order for equality to become a possibility. However, I still feel a degree of resentment about these programs being offered when I have to borrow money in an effort to obtain my university degree. Will this resentment evolve? When I hold a management position in the future, will I discriminate against a person because he or she doesn’t have a huge student loan to pay and another does? It is cases like mine that causes racism to continue in society and the workplace today? With the announcement of Nova Scotia’s plan to increase immigration into the province came an increase in the racist comments I have heard. Since I work in bars I hear, and partake in, a great deal of conversation. When people are drinking they tend to be even more likely to say things they normally wouldn’t. That is why I have heard, at times, some very racist remarks. People have said that the government should be trying to retain people in the province that are born here before they bring â€Å"foreigners† here. They need to take care of their own first!! It is because of these comments and feelings that I am doubtful that discrimination against people, because of their race or color, will ever be completely eliminated in the country. How do we achieve equality with so much differentiation? How do we check or personal opinions at the door when we go to work? Since it is impossible to eliminate racism and discrimination entirely in society, we need to do as much as possible to eliminate it in the workplace. We need to make changes similar to the changes companies have made in an effort to combat discrimination against people because of their religion. For example, adapting zero tolerance rules, providing more education for employees, human resource departments need to provide more opportunities for people of minorities, immigrants, and Aboriginal Peoples and barriers have to be removed for all these people who are trying to enter our labor market. March 21, 2005 is International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination a day to remember the struggles and challenges that Aboriginal peoples and people of color have endured. It is also a time to recognize and applaud the fact that members of these two communities have made anti-racism struggles a significant part of labor’s agenda. Lets’ respect this day and try to make some positive changes at home, school, or work toward eliminating racism.

Sex’ vs ‘Sexuality

Assembling an Understanding of ‘Sex’ Verses ‘Sexuality’ â€Å"Biologists and psychologists who have accepted the doctrine that the only natural function of sex is reproduction have simply ignored the existence of sexual activity which is not reproductive† Alfred Kinsey (The Invention of Sexuality 40) The terms ‘sex’ and ‘sexuality’ have not always had a clear differentiation, but as the study of sexuality (sexology) has continued and become more commonly studied and recognized, these terms have adapted their own definitions.However, each does not have a perfect definition, because people will have their own opinions regarding the terms. The above quote by a historian of sex was interesting to me because it brings up the aspect of biology within the understanding of the terms ‘sex’ and ‘sexuality’. My personal idea, or understanding, is that ‘sex’ constitutes the more biological side†” ones physical features, gender, reproduction (‘sex’ is also the abbreviation for sexual intercourse); and the term ‘sexuality’ makes up everything else that surrounds an individual’s definition of their sexual identity, orientation, and feelings.When reading articles online, I came across this quote: â€Å"sexuality is about who or what you are attracted to, not where you put your dick† (bitheway), which I found to be a very blunt but interesting way to think about what constitutes ‘sexuality’. â€Å"Where you put your †¦Ã¢â‚¬  is your personal preference, but that preference is a compilation of the aspects of one’s personal world and how they have come to define and understand their individual inclination. All of the parts that are compiled in order to form ones individual definition are aspects of ‘sexuality’ within our culture.Another page online gives definitions for ‘sex’ and Ã¢â‚¬Ë œsexuality’ that I have found to be the most clear and complete: Sex refers to whether or not a person is male or female, whether a person has a penis or vagina. Sexuality refers to the total expression of who you are as a human being, your femaleness or your maleness†¦ Your sexuality is an interplay between body image, gender identity, gender role, sexual orientation, eroticism, genitals, intimacy, relationships, and love and affection†¦ includes his or her attitudes, values, knowledge and behaviors.How people express their sexuality is influenced by their families, culture, society, faith and beliefs. (Sex and Sexuality: Understanding the Differences) The influence from all aspects of our lives that guide us to define our sexuality is a major component in sexology. The italicized words in the definition above are some I think are very significant in understanding what constitutes ‘sexuality’.Since the study of sex started to dramatically change, there has been more understanding within so many topics of sexuality, such as gender (roles and variance), marriage and the family, homosexuality, heterosexuality, bisexuality, intersex, trans-gender/sex/vestite, evolution of sexual identities, legal and medical regulation, religious roles/codes, phallocentricism, women’s bodies and health, illegitimacy, â€Å"and the importance of social networks and oppositional sexualities† (The Invention of Sexuality 39).This is only the first week that I have studied sexuality and culture in an educational environment, and after enjoying many sources of new material I have begun to compile my own understanding of ‘sex’ and ‘sexuality’, which is just the beginning of my learning on the subject. One of the most important aspects to take away from these introductory lessons is how grand of a role society and culture have on sexuality.It is so important to be aware of and take into account culture’s influen ce on sexuality now and within the history of sex. In our US society (and this is a generalization) some vital influences are class, race/ethnicity, gender, age, family history and how one was raised, physical ability, religion and region. Incredible Hulk Means Incredible Band-Aids Essay

Band-Aids have been around since the 1920s, and they are an internationally known product. Band-Aids must be marketed to an international audience, and since most everyone knows what a Band-Aid is, the company must rely on marketing techniques to show consumers why the Band-Aid brand is the best choice to purchase. In a Band-Aid advertisement released in 2010 by an advertising company, JWT Dubai, there is a picture of the Hulk’s hand with a tiny Band-Aid wrapped around it, and the entire page is colored with different shades of green. This ad is not covered in crazy pictures or an array of vibrant colors; it is simple and concise. This simplistic advertising of the Hulk’s hand makes this ad easy for anyone to comprehend, and it also conveys several different powerful messages to show a consumer the effectiveness of this product. Johnson & Johnson was founded in 1886 and is a Fortune 500 corporation that has worldwide pharmaceutical sales of around 65 million dollars. Jo hnson & Johnson sells medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and consumer-based packages (Wikipedia, 2011). Three brothers founded Johnson & Johnson in Brunswick, New Jersey, and then an employee invented Band-Aids. In 1921 Band-Aids were made available to the public, and it was the first commercial dressing made for small wounds (Johnson & Johnson, 2011). This corporation now operates in over 57 countries, and its products are sold in over 175 countries. Johnson & Johnson ranks at the top of Harris Interactive National Corporate Reputation Survey, and the Barron’s magazine has ranked them the world’s most respected company. The U.S. State Department awarded Johnson & Johnson with the Benjamin Franklin Award for public diplomacy for funding international education programs. (Wikipedia, 2011). Johnson & Johnson is a globally known company, and almost everybody has used a product from this company. Even though Johnson & Johnson is a large and well known company, advertising is an essential tool to keep reminding consumers who can provide the best at home medical products. This advertisement was marketed internationally, and The Hulk, is an internationally known hero. The target audience was geared more towards men, children, and parents. Men are more likely to know who The Hulk is, and that is why this ad was placed in various men’s magazine. This ad was placed in different video game magazines that are read by mostly boys and men. Another placement of this ad was on the Internet, like children’s clothing sites. This could be effective because a mother could be shopping for clothes for her son, and she sees the ad and can relate to it because her son loves The Hulk. This ad could be placed in nearly any magazine, and be effective because of the nature of the product. Even though this ad is aimed more at men and boys, it has other ways to attract women to the product. This ad was also placed in some women’s magazines like home and garden, crafts, and even fashion editorials. Even if a woman did not know who The Hulk was, she can still conclude from the advertisement that the Band-Aid heals, protects, and is strong. This ad can appeal to men and young boys more than women, but no matter where it is placed it can still convey a message of strength and healing. By using the comic pop culture icon, The Hulk, it shows the strength and flexibility of the Band-Aid. The main point of this advertisement is to show how flexible the bandage is. The idea was that Bruce Banner put the Band-Aid on before he became The Hulk, and when he turned into The Hulk, the band aid was so flexible and strong it did not fall off. The Hulk is associated with strength, so by seeing the Hulk’s hand the idea of strength is revealed. The message is no matter how active you are or where you go, the Band-Aid will stay put. Another message that can be relayed is that The Hulk seems indestructible, and even super heroes use Band-Aids, and no household should go without them. By using the renowned hero The Hulk, the product’s benefit truly comes to life, and the ad speaks volumes using no words. Some ideas and messages are conveyed to a consumer in other ways than words. In this advertisement the color green is used to help emphasize the idea of the ad. The color green is used worldwide to represent safety and is considered the most restful color. Even if someone did not know who The Hulk was, this ad could still be beneficial because it shows a strong hand with a little Band-Aid wrapped around it, and it could be inferred that the little Band-Aid is strong.
